BoozeHunters Bartender Profile: BoozeMaster(R)
Years Mixing: 30
The Bartender profile for John could not be more classic. John Cocchiola has been tending bar since 1979, starting at his family’s restaurant in Glen Cove, New York. A landmark on the North Shore of Long Island, the Stango’s Restaurant was an iconic and legendary Italian family restaurant in this predominantly Italian immigrant community.
John talks about the family business that extends back almost 100 years at the Glen Cove location, and how his grandparents and parents continued to serve booze without pause through prohibition. He proudly tells of the family heritage as moonshiners and bootleggers during the American prohibition of alcohol.
With a wry smile he proudly talks of how his grandmother cooked Whiskey in a tea kettle and served it in tea cups during the prohibition.
Long Island’s North Shore and the Long Island Sound was a major battle ground site between bootleggers and authorities during this era, with many sensational confrontations taking place on the waters along the Gold Coast.
John continues to stick to his bartending roots on the North Shore of Long Island after the family business was closed and sold to new owners. A classic BoozeMaster and mixologist, John is the quintessential bar man. His skills, time in the business, pedigree and barroom manner puts him near the top of the class.
